Propecia is a revolutionary and break-through drug - currently the only drug of its pharmaceutical action on the market - in the treatment of slight to substantial male pattern hair loss. Propecia is used to combat the natural shrinking of hair follicles on the crown of the head, or vertex, as well as the middle-front of the head (anterior mid-scalp area), however there is insufficient scientific evidence to support that it works on hair loss at the temples.

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a naturally produced hormone in the male body that impedes the growth of hair by shrinking the hair follicle. This shrinkage ultimately ceases the production of hair by the follicle resulting in an overall thinning effect or even total baldness. Propecia effectively blocks the release of DHT in the body, thus off-setting the loss hair that this hormone causes. In most cases, further hair loss in patients is prevented and the regrowth of hair encouraged.
Propecia and Women: An Important Note
Propecia is used for the treatment of hair loss exclusively in males because causes of hair follicle shrinkage, whereas in females hair loss is generally of a different nature. As such, the blocking of the male hormone DHT by Propecia will be redundant in females. Furthermore, the active ingredients in Propecia have been clinically shown to cause abnormalities in the male sex organs of developing fetuses. As such, women that are pregnant, or may potentially be or become pregnant should avoid handling broken or crushed Propecia tablets or tablet residues. Propecia tables, as a precaution, are manufactured with a protective waxy coating to prevent contact with its active ingredients during normal handling. Pregnant women and children that have ingested Propecia should immediately be taken to a doctor.
What are the statistics?
A five year clinical test of the anti-hair loss drug Propecia yielded highly effective results. 90% of all men experienced positive and visible results that either manifested themselves in the regrowth of hair (48%), as measured by a hair count, or the ceasing of hair loss altogether (42%). The majority males who undergo Propecia treatment reported improvement through the shrinkage of their bald spot and/or the visible thickening of their hair. It is important to note that the pharmaceutical action of Propecia is to stop the production of follicle-shrinking DHT in the body and so, while it arrests hair loss, the regrowth of hair cannot be expected. As such, for Propecia to be most effective, treatment is encouraged at the early onset of hair loss in males.
A small percentage of men who underwent clinical studies and trials of the anti-hair loss drug Propecia, experienced sexual side-effects, which manifested themselves in their desire for sex, the ability to achieve an erection and the volume of semen produced in ejaculation. However, these side-effects were noted in less than 2% of males and immediately cleared upon the ceasing of Propecia treatment. How do I get Propecia? Propecia is widely available on the market and can be purchased from any clinic or pharmacy. Propecia is a prescription-only drug and so for males experiencing the onset of baldness and thinning hair/hair loss, should contact their doctors for a prescription.
